Using his light powers, Balder frees Karnilla and with Thor reduces the Frost Giants in size, and melts the castle of Utgard-Loki. With the help of Whiteface, Agnar makes it back to Nornkeep. But he is caught and forced to fight Hagen, who is armed with the Sword of Frey. Balder has snuck his way into the castle of Utgard-Loki. Balder and Agnar return and head out to rescue her. The Frost Giants attack Nornheim, and kidnap Karnilla. Balder eventually finds him, and begins training to join Thor for his trip to Hel (region of Niffleheim). Agnar arrives to tell Balder all that has happened, but is intercepted by Karnilla, and thrown into a dungeon.
It would be difficult to see the character take on a major role at this point, but he always makes for a unique shift in Thor stories.Balder is in Nornheim, unaware of Odin's fate. But he was ultimately cut from the film, and the film instead primarily focused on Thor and Loki. He initially appeared in the screenplay for the first Thor, even reaching the point where he got designed in key art for the film. This is likely why the character didn't appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But sometimes, having that calming influence between Thor and Loki can be seen as a distraction from one of Marvel's most compelling sibling rivalries. It gives their family an interesting wrinkle. He's someone that both Thor and Loki can admire, but find insufferable all the same. He's a much needed calming influence between Thor and Loki, with both brothers earning a place by the side of their sibling. He takes his failures more seriously than others, with his role as King of Asgard often being held in doubt over his inner turmoil. But despite his natural skill and boldness, Balder is shown to be a more empathetic figure. Most Asgardians are defined by their warrior spirit and killer instinct. Balder is an interesting subversion of the typical Asgardian character.
